Alberta's Electronics Recycling Surcharge
Alberta is moving ahead as a leader in environmental management, with the creation of the first provincial electronic recycling program in Canada.
As of October 1, 2004, televisions, computer monitors, CPUs, laptops, electronic notebooks and printers that were going into Alberta’s landfills began to be collected, reused, recycled and turned into new products and economic opportunities for Albertans.
Effective February 1, 2005, an environmental surcharge will be applied to the following electronics delivered in Alberta, with the exception of the city of Lloydminster:
| Item | Environmental fee |
| Television (18" and smaller, including combo units) Television (19"- 29", including combo units) Television (30" - 45", including combo units) Television (46" and larger, including combo units) CPUs (including mouse, keyboard, cables, speakers.) Printers/printer combos Laptops/electronic notebooks Computer monitors |

This recycling charge also applies to any television or computer product received as a bonus gift.
This surcharge will cover the costs of collection, transportation and recycling of electronic materials, public information and awareness programs, and electronics-related research.
The surcharge will be shown in the shopping cart and is GST taxable. Charges are not eligible for No GST promotions.
A non-profit organization – Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) – will manage the province-wide recycling program on behalf of Albertans.
